It is one of those conditions people are reluctant to discuss, even with their doctor, yet it is remarkably common, affecting an estimated half of all adults by the age of 50.
The discomfort, the itching, the pain, the bleeding, the sheer inconvenience and embarrassment of hemorrhoids can significantly affect quality of life, and the reluctance to talk about it means many people suffer in silence, reaching for over-the-counter creams that soothe symptoms temporarily while the underlying problem persists.
Hemorrhoids, sometimes called piles, are swollen, inflamed veins in the rectum and anus. While they are rarely dangerous, they can be genuinely uncomfortable and distressing, and recurrent or chronic hemorrhoids point to underlying factors, digestive health, venous integrity, and lifestyle patterns, that deserve attention.
At Healing4Soul Wellness Center, we approach hemorrhoids not just as a local problem to be soothed, but as a signal of underlying factors that, when addressed, support genuine healing and prevention. This article explores the holistic approach to hemorrhoids, comfort, and healing, with the compassion and openness this common condition deserves.
Understanding Hemorrhoids
Hemorrhoids are swollen, enlarged veins in the lower rectum and anus, similar to varicose veins but in this location. They develop when the veins in this area become stretched and swollen under pressure, much as varicose veins develop in the legs.
The two main types of hemorrhoids:
Internal hemorrhoids
Located inside the rectum, internal hemorrhoids are usually not visible and often not painful (as this area has fewer pain-sensing nerves), but they can bleed, producing the bright red blood sometimes noticed with bowel movements. They can also prolapse, or protrude through the anus, particularly during straining.
External hemorrhoids
Located under the skin around the anus, external hemorrhoids can be felt and are often more uncomfortable, producing itching, pain, and swelling. A blood clot can sometimes form in an external hemorrhoid (a thrombosed hemorrhoid), causing sudden, severe pain and a hard lump.
Common symptoms of hemorrhoids:
- Bright red bleeding with bowel movements
- Itching or irritation in the anal area
- Pain or discomfort, particularly with external hemorrhoids
- Swelling around the anus
- A lump near the anus, which may be sensitive or painful
- A sense of incomplete evacuation
An important note on bleeding:
While hemorrhoids are the most common cause of rectal bleeding, bleeding should never be assumed to be from hemorrhoids without proper evaluation, as it can occasionally indicate more serious conditions. We always encourage appropriate medical assessment for any rectal bleeding, particularly new bleeding, bleeding in those over 40, or bleeding accompanied by changes in bowel habits, to rule out other causes.
The Root Causes and Contributing Factors
Understanding what drives hemorrhoid development the foundation of both healing and prevention is.
Straining and constipation
Straining during bowel movements is one of the most significant causes of hemorrhoids. The pressure of straining, often due to constipation and hard stools, stretches and swells the rectal veins.
This makes constipation and its underlying causes central to hemorrhoid development, connecting hemorrhoids directly to digestive health.
Chronic constipation or diarrhea
Both chronic constipation (with straining and hard stools) and chronic diarrhea (with frequent irritation and pressure) contribute to hemorrhoids.
Low-fiber diet
A diet low in fiber leads to harder stools and more straining, directly contributing to hemorrhoid development. Fiber is central to both prevention and healing.
Prolonged sitting
Sitting for long periods, particularly on the toilet, increases pressure on the rectal veins. Spending excessive time on the toilet, often reading or on the phone, is a common contributor.
regnancy
Hemorrhoids are very common during pregnancy, due to the increased pressure from the growing uterus, hormonal changes affecting the veins, and the strain of childbirth.
Obesity
Excess weight increases pressure on the pelvic and rectal veins.
Aging
The tissues supporting the rectal veins can weaken with age, making hemorrhoids more common.
Venous integrity
The strength and integrity of the veins themselves, influenced by connective tissue health and the same factors relevant to varicose veins, affect susceptibility to hemorrhoids.
Heavy lifting
Frequent heavy lifting, particularly with improper technique and breath-holding, increases pressure on the rectal veins.

Topical and Physical Approaches
For hemorrhoids, local and physical approaches provide meaningful comfort and support healing.
Sitz baths
Soaking the affected area in warm water for 10 to 15 minutes several times a day, particularly after bowel movements, soothes discomfort, reduces inflammation, and supports healing.
Sitz baths are one of the most effective and comforting measures for hemorrhoids and can be enhanced with the addition of soothing ingredients like Epsom salts or witch hazel.
Topical witch hazel
Applying witch hazel to the affected area reduces swelling, soothes irritation, and relieves discomfort. Witch hazel pads or compresses are convenient and effective.
Cold and warm applications
Cold compresses can reduce swelling and numb discomfort, while warm sitz baths soothe and support circulation. Using whichever provides more relief, or alternating, supports comfort.
Proper toilet habits
Avoiding straining, not spending excessive time on the toilet, responding promptly to the urge to have a bowel movement, and using a footstool to elevate the feet (which aligns the anatomy for easier elimination) all reduce the pressure and straining that worsen hemorrhoids.
Gentle hygiene
Keeping the area clean with gentle, fragrance-free cleansing, using moist wipes or water rather than dry toilet paper, and patting rather than rubbing, reduces irritation. Avoiding harsh soaps and products protects the sensitive tissue.
Movement and avoiding prolonged sitting
Regular movement support circulation and healthy bowel function, while avoiding prolonged sitting reduces pressure on the rectal veins. For those who sit for long periods, taking regular breaks to stand and move helps.
Dietary Approach to Hemorrhoids
Diet is central to both healing and preventing hemorrhoids, primarily through supporting soft, easily passed stools that eliminate straining.
Emphasize:
- High-fiber foods including vegetables, fruits, legumes, nuts, seeds, and whole grains
- Plenty of water and hydrating fluids to keep stools soft
- Foods with natural stool-softening effects including prunes, figs, and flaxseed
- Vitamin C and bioflavonoid-rich foods that support vein health
- Anti-inflammatory whole foods
- Fermented foods to support healthy digestion
Minimize or eliminate:
- Low-fiber processed foods that lead to constipation and straining
- Excessive dairy, which is constipating for many
- Refined carbohydrates and sugar
- Excessive red meat without adequate fiber
- Spicy foods, which can irritate some people
- Alcohol and caffeine in excess, which can be dehydrating
The fiber and water partnership
As with constipation, increasing fiber and water together is essential, since fiber without adequate water can worsen constipation. The combination produces the soft, bulky, easily passed stools that prevent straining and support hemorrhoid healing.
Addressing the Digestive Root
Because constipation and straining are so central to hemorrhoids, addressing digestive health and healthy elimination is the foundation of both healing and prevention. This connects hemorrhoids directly to the broader topic of gut motility and healthy bowel function.
By ensuring healthy, regular, soft bowel movements through adequate fiber and hydration, supporting healthy gut motility, addressing any underlying constipation, and eliminating straining, we remove the primary driver of hemorrhoids.
Combined with support for venous integrity and appropriate topical comfort measures, this addresses hemorrhoids at their root and prevents recurrence.
At Healing4Soul, we help our patients address not just the discomfort of hemorrhoids but the underlying digestive and venous factors that drive them, supporting genuine healing and lasting prevention.
Comfort, Healing, and Prevention
Hemorrhoids, while common and uncomfortable, respond very well to a comprehensive approach that addresses both the immediate discomfort and the underlying factors.
By supporting healthy digestion and soft stools, strengthening venous integrity, providing soothing local care, and addressing the lifestyle factors involved, hemorrhoids can heal and, importantly, be prevented from recurring.
