The Journal of Integrative Medicine's March 2013 issue reported an interesting finding on the effect of homeopathic Phytolacca Decandra (PD) on skin melanoma. In this study, researchers looked at how PD would impact skin melanoma, cervix cancer, and prostate cancer after being exposed for 24  and 48 hours.  Treating with PD reduced cell viability in vitro for ALL THREE cancer types, but the impact on A375 cells was more remarkable at 48 hours of treatment, so researchers focused more in depth on skin melanoma. 

Results showed that PD administration caused a remarkable reduction in A375 cell proliferation without showing much cytotoxicity in peripheral blood mononuclear cells. Generation of ROS (Reactive Oxygen Species) and DNA damage, which made the cancer cells prone to apoptosis, were found to be enhanced in PD-treated cells.

The following graphs indicate the results of cell viability assay of Phytolacca Decandra on A375 cells (A), HeLa cells (B), PC3 cells (C) and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (D) incubated for 24 h and 48 h.

Researchers concluded that Phytolacca showed a profound anticancer effect on skin melanoma by indulging the cells to die. Therefore, the results of the present study would validate the efficacy of PD as an anticancer drug and might encourage the CAM practitioners to use homeopathic Phytolacca as a supportive medicine as an anti-melanoma drug.
