MRSA stands for Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus and is a type of bacteria that causes infections in different parts of the body. MRSA first started to appear around 50 years ago following the introduction of antibiotics to which the bacteria have become increasingly resistant; making it difficult to treat.

Roughly 25%-30% of us have staph bacteria in our noses or on our skin without being infected by it. Staph becomes a problem when it gets into the body – usually through a cut – and can cause an infection. Once in the body, the MRSA reacts one of two ways:

  • The infection can be minor and local (a pimple)
  • The infection can be more serious (involving internal organs). Serious staph infections are more common in people with a weak immune system, including patients in hospitals, long-term care, cancer patients and those receiving kidney dialysis.

Traditional Treatment Options

For a minor MRSA infection, having your health care provider drain the boil or a pimple and then keeping it covered is all that is needed. For a serious staph infection, traditional treatment can include antibiotics, IV fluids and oxygen.

Homeopathic and Holistic Options

At Healing 4 Soul, we do not recommend self-treating for MRSA and suggest you see a qualified Homeopath to help you with this condition. Some of the remedies your homeopath will consider for minor and local MRSA include:

  1.  Hepar Sulfuris Calcareum – Often used for those with boils and pimples on the skin and is helpful where there is pus formation. The infected area is often bright red, hot and painful – particularly when touched.
  2. Sulphur – MRSA may respond well to Sulphur if the patient has sore, itchy, inflamed, dirty looking skin around the eruption. Bathing and heat will make the patient feel worse are other indicators that Sulphur will be helpful.
  3. Cantharsis – Helpful for the burning pain associated with local MRSA.
  4. Silicea – Useful for opening up boils
  5. Applying pure, raw and unfiltered honey directly onto the skin boil aids in the removal of bacteria.
  6. Pleo San Staph – is a unique homeopathic medicine that is used for the relief of acne, boils, and abscesses.

For more serious MRSA, your homeopath will consider some of the following options:

  1. Notatum - produced from the Penicillium chrysogen-um mold fungus. It is not an antibiotic and does not produce antibiotic substances, therefore, there are no side effects which may occur during treatment with antibiotics, such as allergies, liver damages, destruction of intestinal flora and the formation of Penicillin resistant
  2. Pleo San Staph – used in conjunction with Pleo Not for a comprehensive MRSA strategy.

Scientists are also studying silver nanoparticles in the fight against MRSA.  The lead researcher had this to say: "We're testing against other viruses and the 'super bug'. Our preliminary results indicate that silver nanoparticles can effectively attack other micro-organisms."
