Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukah, and New Years – that’s a lot of celebrating with family and friends – and potentially overeating and over celebrating! We would like to share some common over the counter homeopathic remedies that will help you make it through the holiday season and keep you at your best. These remedies can be picked up at your local health food store and are inexpensive and incredibly effective. We suggest a vial of 30c pellets of the remedies you think you will need and if the occasion arises, take 3-4 pellets until symptoms dissipate.

Nux Vomica – this is THE overindulgence remedy. Did you eat too much? Drink too much? Nux will help you with that unsettling feeling that you just did too much, particularly with eating and drinking. If you develop a headache or a migraine following excessive consumption of alcohol; have a sensitivity to lights, odors or noises; feel nauseous, have diarrhea, and feel like you have undigested food sitting like a rock in your stomach, Nux is for you. The remedy can also be taken in advance to try and stave off the “over did it” feelings.

Arsenicum album - This remedy is helpful if a person feels anxious, restless yet exhausted, and is worse from the smell and sight of food. Burning pain is felt in the stomach and esophagus which often is relieved by warmth and sitting up. Very helpful in helping with vomiting and diarrhea are possible. Upsets from spoiled food (food poisoning) or from eating too much fruit often respond to this remedy.

BryoniaThe “grumpy bear” remedy. This remedy may be indicated for those you feel grumpy and want to stay completely still and not be touched or talked to. The stomach feels heavy, with rising acid and a bitter or sour taste. Pain and nausea are worse from the motion of any kind. The person may have a dry mouth and be thirsty.

Lycopodium – For stomach pain with a lot of rumbling, gas, and distention of the stomach. There are burping and flatulence.

Ignatia – is indicated if nausea is due to emotional stress. Often times the person complains of a lump in the throat.

Pulsatilla – helps with slow digestion due to rich food. There may be a headache, burping, gas, flatulence and the repeating of food several hours after eating. Fruit makes the person feel worse.

Gelsenium – Wonderful for tension headaches and stomach pain due to the anticipation of an event – even a joyful one like gathering with friends for the holidays.

Cocculus – great for motion sickness that causes headaches, dizziness, and nausea. The person will feel weak and want to be left alone.
